Arizona Vital Records
Arizona began statewide recording of births and deaths in July, 1909,
though the Office of Vital Records has collected many of these records
from 1884 and 1887 respectively. Marriage records, however, are still
recorded in the county Superior Court clerk's office where the marriage
occurred.

Arizona Land Records
Arizona is a federal-land state. Lands were generally bought from
the government or from other individuals. For patents to government
purchases, contact the BLM Arizona State Office, which also has
copies of the tract books and township plat maps. The National Archives
in Washington, D.C. has the land-entry case files for government
purchases, the GLO headquarters tract books, the original township
plat maps, and a card index to Arizona patentees to 30 June 1908
(excluding private land claims). Local land office records are now
mostly found in the National ArchivesPacific Southwest Region
at Laguna Niguel, California.
For private land claims, (the settling of property
ownership by the government of the United States for lands previously
acquired under a different sovereign) write to the BLM New Mexico
State Office. For transactions between individuals, consult the
local County Recorder's office.

Arizona Court Records
Court records can be a complex source for any state. Their records
entail probate records (which include wills), guardianship, naturalization,
and a wide variety of other sources, ranging from criminal trials
to simple road orders. All contain information about individuals
within the area. It should be remembered that there are different
levels of jurisdiction for courts in the United States, all of which
should be considered for research under various circumstances. Court
of Common Pleas, Orphan's Court, Probate Court, District Court,
Superior Court, Supreme Court, and other titles are among those
encountered. To study more about court records in general, see:

in Loretto Dennis Szucs and Sandra Hargreaves Luebking, eds., The
Source: A Guidebook to American Genealogy, rev. ed. (Salt Lake City:

Arizona Military Records
The Arizona Historical Society has a good collection of government
records, including the records of each of the frontier military
posts in Arizona, and quartermaster records relating to supply,
construction, and equipment of Arizona military posts. The collection
has been microfilmed and cross-filed in their card catalog. They
will consult the catalog and supply copies of their materials for
a small fee.
State military records are housed at the Arizona
State Adjutant General's Office, 5636 East McDowell Road, Phoenix,
Arizona 85008. There is one roll of microfilm of the Union Army
Volunteers of the Civil War. It is listed as M532 in the National
Archives catalog. Also there is one roll for Confederate service
(M318). The index is M375.
